Fantastic Collection of Par 3s
One of the best things about playing Prestwick Country Club is the fantastic collection of par 3s on the golf course. Each one has its own unique look and challenge to be sure. Golfers get a little bit of everything with each of the four par 3s. There is plenty of water and sand coupled with contoured greens to provide a thought provoking challenge. With tees ranging from as short at 73 yards from the front tees to 246 from the back tees golfers of all skill levels can find a spot to take on these holes.
The first par 3 on the course is the 5th hole. Probably the toughest of the par 3s on the course hits the golfer right away. No sense easing into things. This demanding tee shot requires a carry over a creek that runs from the tee box, in front of the green and turns along the left hand side of the green. The green is guarded by two pot bunkers on the right hand side. If that isn’t enough, the about mid-green there is a severe slop from right to left. Precision into this putting surface is paramount to having a chance at birdie or even par.
The 8th hole is a straight forward hole. It is a bit lengthy. The middle tees play around 190 yards. The longest par 3 on the course, No.8 has two large and flat bunkers on the front of the green that leave a narrow run up area should the tee shot come up short. The putting surface is large and slopes from back to front. The length makes this otherwise easy tee shot intimidating.
Once making the turn, golfers make their way to at treat. Up next is the best par 3 on the course. The 13th hole is a beautiful par 3 over water. An elevated green with a hillside and bunkers behind the putting surface and nothing but water in front of it. It is a fantastic test of nerves no matter what tee box is played. Nerves will be tested. Once safely on land, golfers are faced with a severely sloped green from front to back. Below the pin is most definitely the place to be on this green.
The last par 3 at Prestwick Country Club is a fun downhill shot to a very large green. A creek guards the left hand side of the green and will gobble up any wayward shots. The flatest putting surface of all the par 3s, the 16th hole is probably the easiest par 3 as well. The elevated tee box allows golfers to take a shorter club to help controlling the approach. The very large green puts a premium on where the tee shot lands. Hit the wrong side of the green and be faced with the possibility of a very, very long putt.
